Tijd/Time with Gerard Bodifee

Het probleem van de tijd houdt de menselijke geest bezig en dat blijkt uit de vele vragen die we krijgen naar aanleiding van de Andromeda-gesprekken (www.huisvoorfilosofie.be). Vooral het gesprek over de tijd roept vele vragen op. Belangrijk is wel dat elke gedachte of theorie die Gerard behandelt in zijn context moet worden geplaatst, anders verliezen de woorden hun betekenis.

Gerard vervolgt:

Toen ik zei: ‘Het nu is niets, haalde ik Augustinus aan, die erop wees dat het nu een raakpunt is tussen verleden en toekomst, een raakpunt dat zelf geen duur heeft en dus 'niets' is. Diezelfde Augustinus wijst er vervolgens op dat heel het leven zich in het nu voltrekt, en dat het nu dus 'alles' is. Uit die paradox komt dan de theorie van Augustinus over de tijd voort, die inhoudt dat de tijd een uitgestrektheid is in onze geest.

Heel anders is de theorie van het blokuniversum, die voortvloeit uit de speciale relativiteitstheorie. In dat verband hebben verleden, heden en toekomst dezelfde realiteit. Wat in het verleden (of de toekomst) ligt is niet minder reëel dan wat ruimtelijk in de verte ligt. Alles bestaat dus en verschijnt opeenvolgend in het bewustzijn van de waarnemer. Omdat dit zo’n interessante en verhelderende theorie is, ben ik er dieper op ingegaan in het vijfde Andromeda-gesprek, Nu is de Tijd.’

The problem of time preoccupies the human mind. In response to our online broadcasts of six ‘Andromeda Talks’ (www.huisvoorfilosofie.be) we received many questions about the notion of time. However, it is important to note that every idea that was discussed in these broadcasts has to be put in its context, otherwise the words lose their meaning.

Gerard continues:

‘When I said: ‘The now is nothing', I quoted Augustine, who pointed out that the now is a contact point between past and future, a point that itself has no duration and is therefore 'nothing'. Augustine then proceeds to point out that our whole life takes place in the now, and therefore, the now is 'everything'. From this paradox emerges Augustine’s theory of time, which states that time is an extensiveness in our mind as Gerard explained in our talk.

Very different is the theory of the block universe, which arises from the special theory of relativity. In that context past, present and future have the same reality. What lies in the past (or the future) is not less real than what spatially lies in the distance. So everything exists and appears sequentially in the consciousness of the observer. I think this is such an interesting and illuminating theory and that’s why I further explained it in our the fifth Andromeda talk, Now is the Time.'

Gerard Bodifee

Bodifee is a Belgian astrophysicist writer and philosopher. At the University in Brussels, where he worked with Nobel prize winner Iliya Prigogine, he conducted scientific research on the origin and evolution of galaxies and obtained a PhD in science with a doctoral thesis titled Oscillating Star Formation and Dissipative Structures in Galaxies. Bodifee is the author of about twenty books on the domain where science, philosophy and religion interact. His main book ‘Meant to Be’ is translated in English.
